Port, Harbor & Coastal Monitoring Systems

Woods Hole Group specializes in the design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance of real-time environmental measurement systems in ports and harbors. Measurements typically include meteorological data such as wind speed and direction, barometric pressure, air temperature, and visibility, as well as oceanographic data including currents or current profiles, water level (tide height), water temperature, and salinity. The data are used in real time by ship pilots, boat operators, port managers, fishermen, the Coast Guard, and law enforcement agencies. For these purposes the data are collected, transmitted, and displayed on a rapid schedule, usually less than 10 minutes. Data can be disseminated directly to users in the form of data files or tabular or graphical displays accessible by web browser over the Internet.

For private clients and non-NOAA government agencies, Woods Hole Group provides a complete range of system design and integration services for port and harbor systems, drawing upon the best available technology from a wide variety of manufacturers to provide the optimum system for each client. We design and build custom mounting hardware and deployment systems, ranging from simple bottom platforms to buoys to moveable-carriage systems mounted on piers or pilings. Depending on the application, we provide specialized data acquisition systems for remote, low-power installations, as well as software for data acquisition, processing, archiving, display, and telemetry. We provide real-time monitoring of system performance, and our staff of field engineers is available for world-wide service.

Jacksonville PORTS®

Woods Hole Group was contracted by the Jacksonville Marine Transportation Exchange (JMTX) to design, install, operate and maintain a large-scale Physical Oceanographic Real Time System (PORTSŪ) in Jacksonville, Florida. The data is processed and displayed thru NOAA PORTSŪ
(http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/ports.html) and is a network of real-time sensors in ports and harbors providing access to information that improves maritime commerce and safety.

The new JXPORTS network is the second largest PORTS installation in the country and provides invaluable information to the users of St. John's River, including the shipping industry, tug services, military personnel, cruise ships, commercial and recreational fisherman, and academic institutions.

Chesapeake PORTS®

The Chesapeake Bay Physical Oceanographic Real Time System (PORTS®) system integrates real-time current profile, water level, salinity, meteorological and bridge air gap data taken from stations located throughout the Chesapeake Bay. Data are telemetered to centralized relay stations, and forwarded to NOAA for real-time evaluation and dissemination to the public.

Woods Hole Group is responsible for the continuing maintenance of fourteen primary and backup water level stations, eighteen meteorological stations (wind, barometric pressure, and air temperature), eleven water temperature sensors and six conductivity/temperature sensors. We also maintain line of sight radios, IP modems, telephone lines and GOES data transmission systems.

In addition, Woods Hole Group is responsible for providing monthly system status reports, and is on call to perform emergency service visits to maintain continuous system operation, and dissemination of real-time data.
