Woods Hole Group is proud to announce that Mitchell Buck passed the Professional Engineers (P.E.) exam in June of 2014.

Mitch is a Coastal Engineer at Woods Hole Group with a broad base of experience in various phases of coastal projects. He received a B.S. in Environmental Engineering from Johns Hopkins University in 2005 and a M.C.E. from the University of Delaware Center for Applied Coastal Research in 2007 where he investigated beach erosion under storm conditions in a wave flume. Mitch has experience developing and employing a wide range of models for coastal processes and nearshore hydrodynamics. With his P.E., he will assume more design responsibilities.

Congratulations, Mitch!

Article about the dedication

The ceremony was held Wednesday July 23, 2014 at River City Brewing Company.
JX PORTS is a major port collaboration project spearheaded by the JMTX Harbor Safety Committee. The system integrates 18 stations and 28 hydrographic and meteorological sensors that measure and transmit real-time water level, current, salinity, atmospheric pressure, air and water temperature along with wind speed and direction data, allowing mariners to maintain an adequate margin of safety for the ever-increasing size of vessels calling the port of Jacksonville. JX PORTS will also deliver critical environmental detail for the recovery and resumption of trade if there is a port shutdown incident caused by a terrorist or natural disaster event resulting in the release of hazardous substances into the air or water.

The Jacksonville Marine Transportation Exchange (JMTX) is Jacksonville's maritime trade organization created to work for the success of its membership and to coordinate the safe, secure and environmentally responsible management of the marine transportation system within the port of Jacksonville.

Woods Hole Group has joined the Corporate Conservation Council of Maine

The council is part of The Nature Conservancy Maine Chapter.

Dave Walsh and Joe Famely attended the annual Corporate Council luncheon on June 20, 2014 and were recognized as the newest member to the council.

Senator Angus King gave the luncheon keynote talk.

Great job!

Woods Hole Group is now a member of Environmental Business Council of New England, Inc. (EBC)

The EBC, a nonprofit organization, was established in 1990 by environmental and energy company executives who began meeting on a regular basis to exchange ideas and share experiences. The EBC was the first organization in the United States established to support and foster the development of the environmental industry. The goal is to enhance business and job growth of both established and emerging environmental and energy businesses. Woods Hole Group helped organize the upcoming Ocean and Coastal Resources Commitee program and Shoreline Resilience: Sand & Gravel Mining on October 31st, featuring 5 speakers from government and industry. 2nd Annual Cape Coastal Conference

Woods Hole Group co-sponsored the event and Kirk Bosma gave a presentation on preparing for sea level rise and climate change at a community and asset scale at the 2nd Annual Cape Coastal Conference (June 5-6, 2014) in Hyannis, MA.

OCEANS ’14 MTS/IEEE

Bruce Magnell and Todd Morrison attended the OCEANS ’14 MTS/IEEE (September 14-19, 2014) in St. John's.

The OCEANS conference is the premier ocean engineering conference worldwide and is held twice each year at locations in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific. This year’s conference in St. John’s, Newfoundland, was attended by nearly 2000 people and 140 exhibitors. Todd and Bruce returned with potentially useful information about new technologies for marine mammal monitoring, current measurement, and autonomous surface vehicles.

NSBPA Conference on New England Coastal Issues

Bob Hamilton and Cathy Morey volunteered their time this past summer on the NSBPA Conference Planning Committee. Cathy coordinated and managed the registration process, plus donated design and printouts of the conference program.

The 2014 NSBPA Conference on New England Coastal Issues took place September 17 - 18, 2014 at the Holiday Inn Taunton, Taunton, MA.

Woods Hole Group’s Bob Hamilton, Cathy Morey, Kirk Bosma, Tara Marden, and Mara Orescanin attended the conference.

Kirk Bosma give a presentation on “Sand Bypassing as a Short- and Long-term Sediment Management Solution at Town Neck Beach, Sandwich, MA”.

ASBPA National Coastal Conference

Lee Weishar & Tara Marden attended the ASBPA National Coastal Conference (October 14-17, 2014) in Virginia Beach, VA.

Lee & Tara gave presentations on:

"Identifying Viable Beach Nourishment Sites on Sediment Starved Beaches Within an Estuary with Rapidly Developing Wetland Resources" – Lee Weishar, Woods Hole Group

"Innovative Cobble Berm Design" to Combat Erosion and Create "Living Shoreline"
– Tara Marden, Woods Hole Group

7th National Summit on Coastal and Estuarine Restoration

Lee Weishar, Kirk Bosma, and Cathy Morey will attend and exhibit at the 7th National Summit on Coastal and Estuarine Restoration (November 1-6, 2014) at the Gaylord National Convention Center just outside in Washington, DC!

If you are planning to attend the conference, please plan to visit us in Booth #724.

Lee and Kirk will be presenting on the following topics:

"Storm Surge Risk and Coastal Engineering Adaptations in a Changing Climate", Kirk Bosma. In many coastal areas, the adverse impacts of climate change and SLR may be reduced by a careful response. The identification of appropriate adaptive actions depends largely on understanding the present and future surge-induced flood risk. This presentation focuses on development of vulnerability assessments and preparedness plans, and provides adaptation action examples.

"The Effect of Rapidly Changing Hydrology and Sheet Flow on a Marsh Restoration Project", Lee Weishar. Storms, hurricanes, intense winds, and rain are unpredictable impacts to restoration projects. These processes can result in changes in the site hydrology and restoration success trajectory. We describe the impact that these events have had on channel development, site hydrology, and on the natural re-vegetation within a large-scale restoration project.

Falmouth Commodores

Woods Hole Group was the corporate sponsor for the Falmouth Commodores on June 28, 2014. The event was kicked off with the first pitch being thrown by Emily Mansfield. The weather was perfect and a great time was had by all. One of our favorite sponsorships to participate in.

Looking forward to sponsoring again in 2015!

Pan-Mass Challenge

On August 2-3, 2014 our own Luke Sabella took to the pavement and rode in the 2014 Pan-Mass Challenge from Babson College to the Bourne Bridge to help raise money for life-saving cancer research and treatment at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Cathy Morey’s husband, Jon Morey, took part also, for the first time, by riding in the one-day event from Babson College to Patriot Place.

Congratulations to both of you for your efforts and amazing rides.

COASTSWEEP 2014

Wood Hole Group participated in COASTSWEEP on October 4, 2014. Woods Hole Group’s Lee Weishar, Leslie Fields, Luke Sabella, Nadine Sweeney, Arden Herrin, and Cathy Morey participated in the clean up at Town Neck Beach in Sandwich, MA. Also, this year we had several local homeowners and volunteers from the area helping us. Thank you all so much! COASTSWEEP is part of an annual event to raise awareness of marine debris and clean beaches from Boston to Bimini. The International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) is sponsored by Ocean Conservancy and brings hundreds of thousands of volunteers to beaches, lakes, and streams worldwide to remove trash and other marine debris and collect data on the specific types of debris being found. In Massachusetts, volunteers have been pitching in to clean up stretches of beaches, marshes, the seafloor, and riverbanks since 1987 as part of COASTSWEEP.
