Woods Hole Group Welcomes New Oceanographer, Dr. Rafael Ramos!

We are pleased to announce our newest hire Rafael Ramos, Oceanographer who has joined our Texas office.  He will be conducting project work, project management, proposals, and assisting with business development. Mr. Ramos’ depth and variety of skills, abilities, and experience are expected to add value to the company and our clients.

Mr. Ramos has fourteen years of experience deploying and recovering moored and non-moored buoys to monitor oceanographic and atmospheric quantities, as well as shorebased radar systems to monitor ocean properties. In addition, with his experience in programming languages such as FORTRAN and C, he has developed software for experimental data acquisition, integration analysis and quality control for various instruments. His experience with scientific and engineering software such as Matlab, and Mathematica includes implementing mathematical/computer models for data interpretation and assessment of significance in the context of coastal dynamics, global circulation, air-sea flux exchange, hurricane development, internal wave patterns and other ocean and atmospheric phenomena. He has also processed and interpreted satellite imagery in order to monitor oil spills, and other materials on the ocean surface.

Starting his career with PEMEX, the national oil company of Mexico, Dr. Ramos designed fixed offshore platforms including generating and implementing risk-based design and assessment criteria. He has also performed structural assessment and re-qualification for platforms that had changes in usage, aging or incurred damage.   Additionally, he conducted studies on conceptual design and feasibility for implementing innovative structural drilling in very shallow water depths.

Dr. Ramos’ educational experience includes a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from the Instituto Politécnico Nacional in Mexico City and a Master of Science in Ocean Engineering from the Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He also has a Ph.D. in Applied Marine Physics and a Post-Doctorate both from the University of Miami-RSMAS in Miami Florida. In addition to his formal education, Dr. Ramos is fluent in Spanish, and has significant experience speaking German.

Dr. Ramos is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Geophysical Union, and is a peer reviewer for leading scientific journals in the area of geophysical science. He is the author and/or co-author of over 10 peer-reviewed publications, 10 conference proceeding papers, and 10 technical conference posters. He has been recognized with a number of awards including Knight Fellowship, from the University of Miami, RSMAS (2012-2013); the 2011 Science & Technology Award (CSTARS Team) from the Department of Home Land Security, the University of Miami-RSMAS Fellowship to Scholastic Achievement, in 1999, and the IMP Engineering Research Award in 1997.
